Winter has arrived, and with it, more respiratory illnesses such as influenza, the common cold, and the ever-present COVID-19. It is holiday time, and we tend to gather indoors where these viruses are more easily transmitted. There are several things we can do to stay healthy.

Start with a check-up: If you haven’t seen your primary provider, this time of year is an excellent time to have an annual wellness visit if you are a senior on Medicare or a physical exam if you are younger. Have your provider review the preventive screenings, tests, and vaccinations you should consider. Ensure you take your medications as directed and have refills set so you don’t run out.
Get Vaccinated: Flu, COVID, RSV, and even the common cold can be more severe for the elderly or people with chronic medical conditions. These vaccines do not prevent you from contracting the illness but lessen the severity and duration. You can receive flu and Covid vaccinations at the same time. Make sure you wash your hands frequently and often.

Stay Hydrated: Hydration is critically important at this time of year. Sweating under layers and being in a dry, dry interior can cause you to lose fluid. You need to drink your fluids. Stay away from the new fad of” IV hydration.” IV fluids shouldn’t be given without prior blood work to determine if you are deficient in an element or need rapid replacement. Giving fluids in his manner can precipitate serious complications.
Exercise: The weather of fall and winter does not preclude exercise. Try ice skating, skiing, cross country, and winter walks. There are many fun activities you can explore.
Do a mental health check: Holiday time can trigger behavioral health conditions— check in with family and loved ones. Check your symptoms to make sure you are ok. Winter can be a wonderful season filled with family and fun. Take steps now to stay healthy. KEEPING HEALTHY THROUGH THE HOLIDAY SEASON
