Homeostasis (ho·me·o·sta·sis) is a medical concept that speaks to the ability or tendency to maintain a stable state despite external forces. Our bodies are designed to maintain this equilibrium even when exposed to stressors. However, we can overrun this system when we continually expose ourselves to too much of one thing. We can overdo good things such as exercise, vitamins, and a particular fruit or vegetable. We certainly overindulge in unhealthy habits such as fattening, sweet foods, treats, and snacks. We are unique creations, made in the image of God, “fearfully and wonderfully made.” God has given us this temple to do his work. If we are to do His work, we must safeguard the temple. Here are some tips to help you find balance. There are no quick fixes, but slow and steady will help you achieve your goals.

  1. You are what you eat. – Spring is a great time to try new fruits and vegetables. Load Ъ of your plate with veggies and fruits of different colors. Try healthy carbs like sweet potatoes. Avoid processed foods, such as fried, battered, etc. Shop the perimeter of your grocery store, or better yet, take a trip to your local farmer’s market. Healthy eating reduces blood pressure, controls blood sugar, reduces cholesterol, and reduces the risk for the development of chronic disease.
  2. Exercise – Movement is probably a better term. Just get up and start moving throughout the day. Stand up if you tend to sit. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Can’t run, go for a walk. Can’t walk, try chair exercises. Before you know it, you will be on your way to a healthier lifestyle. Sleep – We need about 6 to 8 hours of sleep a night. Sleep is when the body repairs itself. Make sure you prepare for sleep. Avoid stimulating activities, eating, etc., at least 2 hours or so before you go to bed. Turn off the TV
  3. Hydrate – It is difficult to say exactly how much water you should drink daily. That is because everyone has different needs. You should drink enough that your urine is clear with almost no color. Trying these simple activities will allow your body to heal and regain homeostasis.
