Tribute to Congresswoman Louise M. Slaughter
The greater Rochester community recently said farewell to an exemplary public servant, Congresswoman Louise Slaughter. She represented the people of this community with distinction and honor. She was always open to listening to the people, even those with whom she had disagreements. She was especially accessible to pastors, clergy and those active in their faith communities. Her fervent commitment to a functioning democracy was matched by her firm religious faith. Only a few minutes in her presence would reveal a person who had the unusual gift of understanding the deep humanity of everyone she encountered. In my own interactions with her—and this observation I believe was shared by many of my colleagues—she understood the importance of the work, of faith community leaders, to her task as a political representative.
