Charity has a special place in Christianity; it goes much deeper than giving away your belongings or money. This idea is tied to the Bible’s teachings. The Old Testament says, “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” This means we must treat others with the same care and kindness we show ourselves. But who exactly is our neighbor? We think of our neighbors as the people living next to us or as our friends and family. But the New Testament gives us a new understanding of who our neighbor is—it can be anyone in need of our help or kindness. The Story of the Good Samaritan In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus tells a story known as the parable of the Good Samaritan. This story begins when robbers steal from and hurt a traveler and leave him by the side of the road. As the man lay injured, several people passed by him but did not help. But then a Samaritan stops to help. He treats the man’s wounds and ensures someone takes care of him. Jesus uses the story of the good Samaritan to teach a lesson about who our neighbors are. He says our neighbor is anyone who needs our help. This could be someone unknown to us, someone from a different background, or even someone we might not usually get along with. In the story, the Samaritan shows kindness and mercy to the injured man. Jesus tells us to do the same, to “Go and do likewise.” Jesus also set an example by living out the lessons he taught.
He often spent time with people overlooked by society. He cared for the poor, healed the sick, and welcomed those others rejected. Jesus loved everyone, regardless of their status or background; this was his way of healing and caring for those in need. The importance of continuous giving While seeing people give to charities during Christmas is lovely, we must remember to keep this spirit of giving alive all year round. As Jesus taught, true charity involves continuous care for others—not only during the Holiday season. The teachings and actions of Jesus remind us to give everyone love and respect. Sharing stories like the Good Samaritan encourages us to see everyone as our neighbor. This means thinking about them at certain times of the year and always being ready to help. We can start living a life of charity by showing kindness to those around us. And no, big gestures are not necessary. Sometimes, a simple act of kindness can go a long way. Remember, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). Final thoughts Charity holds a special place in Christian teachings. The example of Jesus and stories like the Good Samaritan teaches us to see anyone in need as our neighbor. So, let’s carry the spirit of giving throughout 2024 and make caring for others a part of our daily lives. In doing so, we follow His word to love our neighbors as ourselves and bring light to the world around us.
