Do you want to support a noble cause that fights for justice and equality? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you don’t want to miss YWCA’s 18th Annual Empowering Women’s Luncheon on October 4, 2023. YWCA CEO describes the event as “more than just a luncheon: it is a celebration of 140 years of service to our community by YWCA, an organization that works tirelessly to eliminate racism and empower women. It is also a celebration of everyone who has worked so hard to better the lives of members of this community.”

On October 4, 2023, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., join us at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center for an unforgettable experience. You will hear from inspiring speakers, connect with like-minded people, and enjoy a delicious meal. You will also have the opportunity to support YWCA’s programs and services that help women and families in need. Here are some of the highlights of this event that you can look forward to:

Keynote Speaker – Erin Gruwell Erin is a renowned author and educator dedicated to empowering students through writing and reading. She is best known for her work with “The Freedom Writers,” a group of students who faced violence, racism, and poverty. Erin helped them find their voice and their purpose through writing their stories. Their stories were published in a book called “The Freedom Writers Diary,” which became a bestseller and a movie starring Hillary Swank. Erin’s story shows us the power of education and empathy to transform lives. She also shows us the need to “Be the Change” and actively work to make our communities more equitable and equal places. Erin has received many awards for her work, including the prestigious Spirit of Anne Frank Award. She is also the founder of the Freedom Writers Foundation: a worldwide organization founded to “inspire young, underprivileged students to pick up pens instead of guns.”

Make New Connections One of the best things about this event is that you will meet people who share your passion and vision for a better world. They will show you the strength and resilience we all have within ourselves. They will also show you how God works in mysterious ways and can use anyone to make a difference.

How You Can Help The Rochester & Monroe County YWCA has been helping women and girls since 1883. It began as a place to provide housing for young women seeking work in Rochester. Over the years, YWCA has continued its mission to empower women. In 1922, it established a race relations committee and a branch for African-American women on Clarissa Street. YWCA became fully integrated in 1951 and has been a strong advocate for racial justice ever since. The funds raised from ticket sales, sponsorships, and donations will be used for important initiatives, including:

Emergency and Permanent Housing: YWCA provides housing for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. YWCA shelters families, individuals with short-term and immediate needs, and individuals requiring longer-term housing. There are young mothers with children utilizing YWCA services and seniors aging in place under the same roof. Every resident is supported by a case worker who assists them in navigating New York support services, finding a job, and locating permanent housing.

  • Rapid Rehousing: YWCA partners with local property managers to assist members in finding community housing and offers support after placement.
  • Supportive Housing: YWCA has dedicated housing for women on the path to recovery from substance use disorder, ensuring a stable environment. YWCA is unique: children are invited to reside with their mothers on this last step to independent living.
  • Promoting Racial Equity: YWCA is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion, striving for a society where everyone is treated fairly. YWCA partners with local organizations to provide racial equity training, opportunities, and support for young women of color and offers development training.
  • Advocacy and Awareness: YWCA raises its voice for women, advocating for policies that create a more equal and just society.
