It’s a Family Affair: The Story of How Dr. Kamae Mcneill started the American Goshinjutsu

A multi-ethnic group of elementary age children are taking a karate class together at a health club. A cute little boy is raising his fist in the air to punch.

It all started in Brooklyn, New York, in 1972, over 50 years ago, when Dr. Kamae was in grammar school. As a Catholic School lad, he had to wear a uniform. The uniform made him a target for gang bullying, which caused him to run home from school. At the start of high school, he found a way to protect himself by joining the Judo club at school. Patrick Beckley was the sensei instructor. Sensei Beckley was a skinny, midsize white male who had a flawless way of moving and teaching Judo. He fell in love with Judo the first day when he was choked and put into a joint lock. McNeill stated this is it for me. McNeill has been able to pass the love of Martial arts on to his children and grandchildren. Martial arts came into play as a confidence booster to do better for McNeill himself in martial arts and outside of martial arts, which has helped McNeill to focus and keep his eye on the prize.
